6 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

6 Ways to Stay Healthy

The holidays are fast approaching, and we’re sure your stress levels are starting to rise. The planning, the shopping, and making sure you’re on top of everything can take a toll on any one’s health. We here at Westland Clinic want to make sure you’re healthy for the holidays, which is why we gathered some tips to help you avoiding getting sick.

1. Get your Flu Shot

This is especially true for young children over the age of 6 months and elderly adults. You need to get vaccinated yearly so that your immune system can keep up with influenza virus. The flu virus is constantly changing and your flu shot from the year previous won’t necessarily help against this year’s strain. Our clinics can help you with you and your family’s flu shot call

2. Wipe away germs

Disinfectant wipes can help you and your family stay as healthy as possible by eliminating germs and bacteria on the surfaces you touch. We recommend the following iIn public places such as on planes, trains, cars and buses:  Wipe down armrests, table trays and air vents with disinfectant wipes, grab handles with wipes to avoid common germ areas. At home: Wipe doorknobs, light switches, tv remotes and fridge handles.

3. Snack wisely and say “No” to treats

Sugars and candy are a terrible thing to snack on while trying to stay healthy. Eating right can help your body have enough energy and nutrients to fight off any sickness that might be lurking. We recommend sticking to fruits and veggies with high nutritional values such as apples, blueberries, leafy greens, and other super foods. The best offense against disease is a good defense, so make sure your immune system has the energy it needs.

4. Get plenty of Rest

It’s amazing what a good night’s sleep can do for your overall health. Studies have shown that people who get less than 7 hours of sleep are three times more likely to become sick.  Giving your body enough time at night to get the rest it needs can make the difference between you getting sick or staying healthy. We recommend at least 8 hours a night for a healthy immune

5. Exercise

They say that exercise is one of the best preventative drugs you can take, and we agree. Getting at least 150 minutes a week of light work out activities (such as walking, or casual biking) or 75 minutes a week of vigorous exercise for a healthy lifestyle.

6. Travel safely – Don’t Drink and Drive

Drinking directly affects your motor skills and reaction time. Adding a car into the mix and you’re setting yourself up for failure. Get to your holiday events and parties safely, designate a driver, watch how much you drink, and call a cab if you need to.

Summer Sun Safety

The summertime is quickly approaching. Most kids like to spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, so it’s always best to make sure that they are getting the proper sun burn protection for their skin. Taking the right precautions from over exposure to the sun can reduce you or a child’s chance from developing skin damage. It’s normal for us to enjoy outdoor activities, but it’s also important that we stay safe.

When trying to avoid the sun, here are a few things you should keep in mind:

  • Seek shade. Being under shade will not only keep you cool throughout the day, but help to prevent any form of excessive sun exposure.
  • Avoid UV/tanning beds.
  • Try to avoid being in the sun rays between 10am-4pm. The sun’s rays are the strongest during this period time. This will keep the sun from burning and harming your skin.Sun over exposure prevention
  • Cover up with clothes, UV sunglasses, and sunscreen. Wearing tightly woven clothes, especially if it is outdoor gear.  This is helpful because it protects you from the harsh UV rays. The darker your clothes are, the better. By simply applying one ounce of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater, 30 minutes prior to going outside, will save you in the long run. Using this type of sunscreen on babies who are six months or younger is not recommended; keep newborn babies out of the sun.
  • Be sure to examine your body every month and see your physician every year to have a skin exam done.

Have you ever experienced a tan or sunburn based on the effects of the sun? The sun can either increase our health or damage it. It’s okay to be exposed to some sun exposure because it is the top source of Vitamin D. This can be beneficial because it helps our bodies absorb calcium for stronger bones. However, receiving too much sunlight on your skin can cause skin cancer, skin damage, and eye damage.

5 Common Myths About Breast Cancer

It is expected that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. During this time, Millennium Medical Group encourages everyone to educate themselves and the people around them about breast cancer.

Myth 1: Men can’t get breast cancer.breast-cancer-awareness

Men are 100 times less likely than women to develop breast cancer. Yet, there are over 2,000 men each year who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Myth 2: Only women with a family history can develop breast cancer and that your father’s family history does not matter.

Did you know that 70 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer had no identifiable risk factors?  The history of  breast cancer on your father’s side is just as important as your mother’s in determining your chances of developing breast cancer.

Myth 3: It is impossible to get breast cancer after getting a mastectomy.

Getting a mastectomy reduces the chances of someone developing breast cancer by an average of 90 percent. There is not a preventative measure that can cause someone to never get breast cancer.

Myth 4: There is nothing that you can do to decrease your chances of breast cancer. You can only just check for the signs.

Making lifestyle changes can lower your risk of developing breast cancer. Making small changes such as getting regular exercise, reducing alcohol consumption, losing weight , or getting regular screenings can help reduce your risk.

Myth 5: Women with fibrocystic breasts have a greater chance of developing breast cancer.

There is no known connection between fibrocystic breasts and the development of breast cancer. It may be more difficult to differentiate between normal and cancerous tissues. Women with fibrocystic breast normally follow their mammogram with an ultrasound.

Recognize the signs:

  • Nipple tenderness
  • Lump development
  • Change in texture or enlargement of pores
  • Change in the size or shape of nipple
  • Swelling or shrinkage in breast size
  • Nipples appearing inward or inverted
  • Clear discharge or bloody discharge

Share this information with others in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness. Schedule your appointment for a mammogram with Millennium Medical Group today in Michigan.
