Is it Changing Weather or Strep Throat?

Kids are back in school and germs are spreading like crazy from school to home. The weather is changing and people are getting scratchy throats and stuffy noses. So, when your child comes home complaining that their throat hurts how do you know if it is strep or just a result of Michigan’s bi-polar weather? The only sure way to know is to have your child tested for strep, but there are some things to look for at home before scheduling an appointment or rushing to urgent care.

What is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection that children spread strep throatattacks the throat and tonsils. The reason strep throat spreads so quickly among school age children is because it spreads through air particles. If a child has strep and is coughing or sneezing in school, or sharing food or drinks with friends, the chances of strep spreading is high.   • Fever over 101 degrees
  • Sudden or severe sore throat pain
  • White or yellow spots on the throat or tonsils
  • Swollen tonsils
  • Bright red throat

Most sore throats are viral and can clear up on their own over time. Step throat is not, so it won’t.
